City centres have bigger car insurance problems, expert claims

Fri, 20 Jul 2007

Major urban city centre areas have a large number of drivers who get behind the wheel without car insurance, one expert has claimed.

According to Susan Beck, head of communications at the Motor Insurers' Bureau, the high levels of crime and other social ills in city centres leads to this car insurance problem.

Hotspots for motorists without car insurance are often located in urban sprawls such as these, said Ms Beck, with Manchester, Birmingham and London inner cities all affected.

Additionally, the expert noted that drivers without car insurance are taking a risk with their own lives, but also threatening those of honest road users.

"Anyone who deliberately chooses not to insure their vehicle, for whatever reason is irresponsible and selfish in the extreme," she said.

She added that in order to be a "responsible citizen" one must ensure that car insurance policies, MOTs and tax are all up to date.

Tesco may have handed a boost to car insurance customers recently by launching a new service that enables them to check the history of their vehicles to ensure that they are not dangerous.
