Motorists warned about car insurance implications of new mobile rules

Mon, 26 Feb 2007

Road users have been alerted to the potential car insurance implications of being caught using a mobile phone while behind the wheel.

From February 27th 2007, all motorists who are found to be committing the road safety offence will be given a £60 fixed-penalty notice, as well as three penalty points on their driving licence.

And since many car insurance companies take into account the number of penalty points on a driving licence before calculating premiums, this raises the prospect that many motorists could find it more difficult to get cheap car insurance quotes after being stopped by road policing authorities.

In addition to the car insurance premium hike, Janet Pell, head of motor insurance at AA Insurance, has outlined the potential safety dangers involved in using a mobile while driving.

"You are risking your life and the lives of others if you use a mobile phone - whether hands-free or not," she said.

"Switch it off or put it on silent while you are driving and only accept or make calls when you are safely parked."
