Car insurance study highlights demand for greener vehicles

Some four in ten UK motorists have said that they would consider paying out extra for a new car if it was environmentally friendly, a car insurance study has revealed.

A survey from Virgin Money Car Insurance has found 41 per cent of the population would be willing to pay at least six per cent more for a car that reduces their carbon footprint.

Of this group, an eco-minded six per cent would be willing to consider a price hike of more than 11 per cent if it could enable them to purchase a low-emissions vehicle.

And it appears that better car insurance quotes would sway more people to go green.

According to the car insurance company, 71 per cent of respondents said that cheap car insurance costs would be one of the main factors that influenced their decision to buy a low-emission car.

"There needs to be more carrot and less stick to encourage more people to make the move into lower carbon-emission motoring," commented Jason Wyer-Smith.

"Insurers can do their bit by looking at special deals for greener cars."

The Toyota Prius has been widely recognised as the first mass-produced green car in the world.

Combining a petrol engine with electric motors, the model was officially launched in Japan in 1997.
