Motorists urged to speak to their insurer

Mon, 31 Dec 2007

Motorists planning to drive abroad have been urged to contact their car insurance provider before embarking upon their journey.

Adrian Webb, head of corporate communications for esure, said that people forfeit all cover when they drive outside of the EU.

Unless a motorist agrees cover with their insurance company before setting off, they could be driving illegally, Mr Webb stated.

"The silliest thing you could ever do when taking your car abroad is to not speak with your insurer," he suggested.

However, obtaining cover can depend on where people intend travelling to, he added, stating that some companies may be unwilling to offer insurance for certain destinations.

For people driving abroad, the British Insurance Brokers Association has offered guidance on how best to prepare.

The organisation advised motorists to have their cars serviced before they go abroad, to contact their insurance provider to ensure they have adequate cover and to take all relevant documents with them.
