Proposals to jail dangerous drivers who use their mobile phones when behind the wheel have been backed by the head of a road safety charity .
The chairman of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), Robert Gifford, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that those who caused crashes while using a mobile phone were deserving of such a sentence.
He said: "I think we ought to put this in context; these are drivers who have also been involved in a crash."
Mr Griffin stressed that this penalty should not be applied in every case as the behaviour of the driver would determine whether he or she was charged with dangerous driving or a lesser offence.
He also said the enforcement of the law against using mobiles while driving had halved the instances of people carrying out this practice.
Following a recent crackdown on road traffic offences in Clackmannanshire, Central Scotland Police stated that mobile phones were one of several common contributory factors to road collisions.
