Car insurance policyholders should let their insurance provider know if they intend to drive abroad, according to one industry expert.
Keith Maxwell, motor account manager for insurance provider More Than, said that car insurance does not necessarily provide cover when a person is driving outside the UK.
He warned that people with comprehensive UK car insurance will have their cover abroad limited to the equivalent of road traffic accident cover unless they take out a foreign use extension.
Mr Maxwell's advice to car insurance customers is to phone up their car insurance provider so that they can check their level of cover.
"If in the UK they have comprehensive cover and they want the same level of cover when they're driving abroad, they need to phone up their insurer and the insurer will issue what's known as a foreign use extension," he said.
The Association of British Insurers says that all UK car insurance policies offer the minimum legally-required cover in other EU countries or the minimum cover required by UK law if that is greater.
