Cars are now being stolen to order and possessions in cars are also being targeted, which could all affect car insurance premiums that drivers pay, an expert has warned.
Drivers who have had possessions stolen from their vehicles are unlikely to see their premiums rise, the RAC has said, as customers usually only claim for damage to the car.
However, car insurance premiums will be affected by the postcode of the owner particularly if the area has a high car theft rate.
Spokesperson for the RAC Liz Kennett remarked: "Cars now have sophisticated alarms and immobilisers so these days it's actually really difficult to steal someone's car unless you have got a pair of keys. Quite often it's about the prestige cars, where people are stealing them to order."
Insurance firms will look at where the vehicle is parked overnight, Ms Kennet added, as parking in a garage rather than on the street is likely to lower car insurance premiums.
In 2006, the Motor Insurers' Bureau reported 36,000 uninsured claims had been made, representing a 4.7 per cent reduction on the previous year.
