Motorists open to identity fraud, car insurance company states

Motorists are being advised by a car insurance company to make sure they remove sensitive documents as well as personal belongings from their cars when they leave the vehicle unattended.

Drivers are leaving themselves open to identity fraud by leaving bills and statements lying around in their vehicles, with as many as a fifth of car owners admitting to leaving £150 of possessions in a vehicle, according to Prudential Car Insurance.

Spokesperson for Prudential Car Insurance Gill Murphy warns that drivers without sufficient car insurance could be left out of pocket if a laptop , work suit and iPod were stolen from a vehicle.

"What is also concerning is the six per cent of car owners who actually forget to lock their car at all - providing thieves with easy pickings," she comments.

Prudential found car owners were most likely to leave clothes for the office, sports equipment and bills within reach of opportunistic burglars.

In related news, uSwitch.com has revealed car showroom finance deals may cost motorists more money than choosing to buy a vehicle with an unsecured personal loan .
