Holidaymakers are being advised by the RAC to ensure they have car insurance when driving abroad.
Spokesperson for the RAC Adam Cracknell commented: "Getting car insurance if you're driving abroad is as valuable as getting travel insurance."
Mr Cracknell stated that if a driver was to get into a car accident abroad without having car insurance they would have to deal with it themselves and could incur very high costs, particularly medical expenses if someone was injured.
Car insurers are trained to deal with such situations and if an accident were to occur on holiday then the problem would be handled by the car insurance company , he added.
The RAC have noted a ten per cent increase in take-up of their European recovery service.
Mr Cracknell also remarked that some motorists may already be covered to drive in Europe as part of their existing policy or it may just be a question of a simple addition a driver has to make to their current car insurance policy.
Yesterday, uSwitch advised motorists that opting for a higher excess could mean cheaper car insurance premiums.
