The widespread flooding that hit many parts of Britain this summer may result in rising car insurance premiums for affected drivers and possibly the rest of motoring Britain, uSwitch has stated.
It is estimated that 1.5 million cars are in flood affected areas and the insurance industry is expecting a total of £2.5 billion worth of insurance claims after the flooding.
Aron Thompson, the head of insurance at uSwitch.com, urged drivers to check their car insurance policy to avoid financial consequences after the flood waters have receded.
"Insurers must also take responsibility to provide their customers with clear, unambiguous information relating to a flood claim at the time a policy is taken out," he added.
The independent price comparison website has warned drivers in flood hit areas that their car insurance premiums could rise by as much as 57 per cent if they make a flood damage claim on their vehicles.
One in four drivers in flooded areas are not thought to be covered for damage as they do not have fully comprehensive car insurance cover.
Yesterday, the AA cautioned drivers that sophisticated car thieves were one of the reasons car insurance premiums were rising.
