Motorists have been urged by the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) to clear out their garages to save money on their car insurance .
By simply removing old paint pots and mattresses out of their garages, drivers could make room for their cars and see rewards in the form of lower car insurance premiums .
Technical services manager at the British Insurance Brokers' Association Graeme Trudgill commented: "The theft and vandalism factor is so much less if it is kept in a garage that most insurers recognise that and are willing to give you a discount.
"The garage or the address your car is kept at overnight every day is an important rating factor."
Motorists in London with high-value cars will see higher car insurance premiums if their vehicle is not kept off the road, he added.
Sainsbury's Bank has conducted research finding that men are more dangerous drivers, which could mean they pay higher car insurance premiums. According to the findings, men are responsible for 94 per cent of driving convictions and, in terms of car insurance, young male drivers are the "higher risk group".
