Motor insurance customers who are feeling the pinch financially may be relieved to hear they are not the only ones, according to a new car insurance study.
Research from car insurance provider Zurich indicates that 74 per cent of drivers confess to having to pay closer attention to budgeting as a result of owning a vehicle.
Moreover, a fifth of owners have revealed they delay paying some costs associated with driving because of financing issues.
In particular, 22 per cent of this group postponed arranging car insurance cover for a short time while three per cent overlooked insurance altogether.
Mark Searles, chief marketing officer at the car insurance broker, has expressed concern about the revelations.
"Some drivers are risking their own and others' safety in a bid to save money," he said.
"We need to change those attitudes and remember that it is a legal requirement to have both a valid MOT and insurance."
In the UK, it is illegal for motorists to drive without a minimum of third party insurance protection, although some road users opt to get further cover by arranging a fully comprehensive car insurance package.
