Car insurance policyholders informed about parking charge hike

Fri, 13 Apr 2007

The cost of parking has increased by approximately a quarter over the last six years, motor insurance customers may be interested to know.

That is the conclusion of a new research project by car insurance specialist Direct Line Car Insurance, which analysed changes to parking charges between 2000 and 2006.

However, some areas of the country saw prices increase by more than 25 per cent over the time period, it has been claimed.

For instance, the Hertfordshire town of Berkhamsted saw the cost of a two-hour parking ticket rise from 10p to £1.08 over the six-year time frame, the car insurance company has discovered.

"Parking is a bone of contention for most drivers in the UK," remarked the car insurance provider's motor spokesperson Emma Hoyler.

"If you are driving into a busy place, it's worthwhile doing some research to find out about any park-and-ride schemes or any cheap car parks in advance."

One method of avoiding expensive facilities may be to manually enter in the locations of inexpensive car parks onto a satellite navigation device.

According to figures cited by the Daily Mail recently, car insurance customers and other road users spent a sum total of £300 million on the direction-finding equipment during the last 12 months.
