A car insurance company has unveiled a new green car insurance package as part of a new initiative to raise awareness of climate change.
In the week that prime minister Tony Blair launched a new anti-global warming campaign, entitled We're in this Together, Royal & Sun Alliance's (R&SA's) direct arm More Than has confirmed that it is cutting car insurance premiums for eco-friendly motors by up to 15 per cent.
Moreover, car insurance customers with green vehicles will be entitled to free carbon offsetting for the first 3,000 miles of driving.
Simultaneously, the car insurance broker has introduced a new car insurance policy that utilises telematics to encourage motorists to cut their car usage and drive in a less fuel-intensive manner.
Bridget McIntyre, UK chief executive of R&SA, explained why the car insurance company felt impelled to get more involved with promoting greener motoring.
"I believe it's the right thing to do," she said.
"Our customers want us to take action and our people want to work for a company that's taking its environmental responsibilities seriously."
In March 2007, financing specialists AA Personal Loans discovered that 20 per cent of motorists looking to buy a new vehicle were planning to find an eco-friendly motor, up from six per cent in February.
