Adhering to motorway rules supported by new car insurance research

Tue, 10 Apr 2007

Motorway rules must not be overlooked by those drivers who are quick to criticise fellow road users, a car insurance expert has said.

In a survey by car insurance company Liverpool Victoria, 39 per cent of motorists believed that inside-lane drivers move too slowly.

Meanwhile, 40 per cent argued that outside-lane drivers behave recklessly and 48 per cent said middle-lane motorists slow down other motorists.

John O'Roarke, managing director of car insurance provider Liverpool Victoria General Insurance, took the opportunity to suggest that some motorists who criticise others may hypocritically be ignoring motorway etiquette themselves.

"It seems the vast majority of people think their driving skills are fine and everyone else is the problem," he said.

"If British motorists became more realistic and tolerant, the roads may be a safer place to drive."

Drivers who collide with another vehicle on the motorway may be forced into making a claim on their car insurance policy.

This could lead their car insurance renewal rates to increase markedly - while they may also lose their car insurance no-claims discount.
