Autumn is the peak season for vehicle theft, a car insurance provider has warned.
September, October and November see an increase in the number of car thefts reported, claimed car insurance provider Norwich Union.
Although the company has recorded an overall decrease in the number of cars stolen in the last three years, autumn regularly sees the number rise.
More than 80 per cent of cars stolen are older vehicles, having been on the road for seven years or more, states Norwich Union, a company which claims to provide car insurance for one in seven cars in the UK.
Nigel Bartram, motor underwriting manager at Norwich Union, comments: "The sustained increase in car theft over the autumn months can be attributed to a few key factors.
"Most obvious is the shorter daylight hours – we all know that thieves prefer to work in the dark.
Norwich Union is part of the Aviva group, which states that it is the biggest insurance provider in the UK and fifth largest in the world.
Aviva also provides life and pension products throughout Europe.
