Female motorists who opt for specialist car insurance providers could be left out of pocket, according to new research.
Some companies which specialise is car insurance for women charge as much as 25 per cent more than generic insurers, a Moneysupermarket.com study reveals.
The company states that a 25-year-old woman living in Leeds could find that the cheapest specialist car insurance provider offers a premium for £387.17, whereas the cheapest deal available is £308.70.
Moneysupermarket.com also believes that ladyinsure.co.uk, Diva Car Insurance, Diamond, Women on Wheels and Sheila's Wheels are not among the five cheapest UK car insurance providers.
Richard Mason, director of insurance at the group, comments: "While some specialist insurers will offer extra benefits to women, such as handbag cover up to £300, half-price MOT or free mobile phone and connection, women should not be swayed by female-friendly adverts offering them cheaper car insurance."
The expert adds that by shopping around, women will often find a better car insurance deal.
Last month, Mr Mason claimed that shopping around for the best deal was "imperative" for car insurance customers.
