Many UK adults would report their family members if they didn't have adequate car insurance, according to new research.
Some 29 per cent of drivers with car insurance would be likely to inform the authorities about an uninsured driver, regardless of whether they were related or a friend, a study by Churchill Car Insurance found.
UK drivers would be more likely to report a driver without car insurance than a "dodgy" salesman or a benefit cheat.
Many UK adults (87 per cent) would also refuse to get into a vehicle if they were aware that it was not covered by car insurance.
Furthermore, 13 per cent of respondents said that driving without car insurance was more serious than speeding or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Frances Browning, a spokesperson for Churchill Insurance, commented: "It is obvious that drivers in the UK feel the current fixed penalty for uninsured driving is far too low, with 35 per cent claiming the fine should be increased to at least £1,000."
American Express recently claimed that the correct car insurance policy could also have a beneficial effect on the value of a car.
