Car insurance warning for careless Brits

Mon, 16 Oct 2006

"Careless" UK motorists are exposing themselves to a higher risk of car insurance claims by leaving valuables unattended, an expert has claimed.

Some £3.3 billion worth of items is left unattended in cars, potentially leading to a hefty car insurance claim, Post Office has warned.

Furthermore, many of the valuables are left unattended, with 12 per cent of Britons admitting that they "rarely or never" attempt to hide the items in the vehicle.

Post Office advises UK motorists to ensure that they have adequate car insurance, should a break-in occur and items be lost.

Clare Oldstein, head of communications for Post Office Car Insurance, said: "Our advice to motorists is to only leave valuable items in the car if it's absolutely necessary, and if they do, to make sure the items are hidden in the boot or at least out of sight of potential thieves."

Ms Oldstein added that drivers must never leave their car insurance documentation inside the vehicle, unless it is also stolen.

Car insurance provider Norwich Union recently warned that autumn is the peak season for vehicle theft.
