Many UK motorists could be putting more than just their car insurance policy at risk, according to new research.
Over one-third (37 per cent) of British drivers have driven "without due care and attention", a new study by Direct Line Car Insurance has revealed.
The company's survey encompassed more than 11,000 motorists in ten UK cities, finding more than 2,000 incidences of potentially dangerous driving.
Of the incidents found, failing to indicate while turning into a junction or changing lanes was the most common, with 32 per cent of motorists doing this, the car insurance provider found.
Around one-fifth of drivers have also failed to stop when observing a pedestrian at a crossing.
Emma Holyer, Direct Line motor spokesperson, said: "Careless driving is a major cause of accidents – and aside from the increased risk of causing a crash, a careless driving offence carries severe penalties so we are reminding motorists to take care, keep their full concentration on their driving and brush up on the rules as detailed in the Highway Code."
Direct Line is one of the UK's major insurance providers, claiming to have more than five million customers.
