Car insurance impossible for Bond, expert claims

Fri, 17 Nov 2006

Super-spy James Bond would not be able to secure a car insurance policy in the UK, one expert has claimed.

The suave expert in espionage has too many prangs in his back catalogue for any car insurance provider to offer him a policy, stated Zurich Insurance.

Although protecting the world from evil madmen on a daily basis, the number of car chases and spectacular crashes the secret agent has experienced would be enough to make him "uninsurable", the group said.

Zurich notes that it would offer a car insurance policy to a 40-year-old civil servant driving an Aston Martin DB7 based in London - with an advanced driving certificate - but balked at the sight of Bond, James Bond, writing off three cars in four days during The World is Not Enough.

Keith Lewis, a spokesman for Zurich, said: "Bond wouldn't be Bond without the shaken not stirred approach, but in the real world, it would cost thousands to insure with just one previous claim.

"With three write-offs, he would be selling diamonds forever to pay for it."

However, Mr Lewis joked that Zurich would consider offering the fictional spy a car insurance policy in the future, if he were to drive with more care in future.

James Bond's latest escapade is out in the cinemas this week, but the sight of 007 flipping another Aston Martin off the road could have car insurance providers choking on their popcorn.
