Co-operative Insurance (CIS) has launched the first eco-friendly car insurance policy in the UK.
CIS, which provides home insurance and motor insurance, claims that the policy contains environmentally friendly features in the underwriting and claims stages, along with other features.
Elements of the car insurance policy include premium discounts for more eco-friendly vehicles and an environmental backed claims service.
David Neave, director of general insurance at CIS said: "While many people accept that motoring is a necessary means of transport many motorists now recognise the environmental impact driving a car has on climate change.
"This product doesn’t just help to offset the carbon emissions at outset it contributes to the management of the environmental impact throughout the entire journey".
The car insurance was devised as part of the ethical engagement policy which CIS implemented in 2005, the first insurance provider in the world to do so.
CIS has also had 7,000 solar panels built on its tower offices and has established the largest inner city windfarm in the UK at its Manchester base.
