Irish experts recently urged consumers to shop around for cheaper car insurance rates before making a purchase – which could save them more then €1000.
Big savings were found by a major cost survey for both male and female drivers nationwide . Consumer Director Mary O’Dea recommended that, regardless of the driver’s age or gender, bargain-hunting around would pay dividends in the long run.
"Many young people find it too costly to get their own insurance policy", said O’Dea, "…in the first few years [they are often] named on a parent’s policy ".
The main findings of the survey indicated that, for example, a 26-year-old male driver in Dublin who has been a named driver on his parents’ policy for eight years could pay between €700 and €1,800 for third party, fire and theft.
In comparison, a 40-year-old male driver with a provisional license and a 1-year no claims bonus could save around €550 on his total motor insurance costs.
