Police forces and local garages in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, are working together to try to reduce the number of car insurance claims made by the local community.
Due to a rise in the number of spare wheel thefts, motorists are being offered low-price wheel locking nuts in order to protect against the outbreak. Local newspapers The Ellesmere Port and Neston Standard have indicated that the crime has been particularly rife amongst Vauxhall Zafiras, Citroen Picassos and Xsaras .
Detective Sergeant Simon Newell commented that: "At the end of the day, they can help save the cost of a new tyre, a new wheel, the repair of any damage and any excess charges which insurance companies may charge if the spare wheel is stolen". Insurance providers are regularly influenced by the vehicle crime rates in particular areas when it comes to making decisions on the premiums charged.
Recent research from Tesco suggests that the cheapest car insurance premiums are for owners based in East Anglia .
