A leading car insurance provider is urging female drivers to shop around when they plan to purchase car insurance, as they could be saving a lot of money by doing so.
Sainsbury's Car Insurance says women often assume that their car insurance premiums are cheaper than their male counterparts' and thus they automatically believe their car insurance deal is a good one.
However, the insurance company warns that this is not necessarily the case.
Because women are statistically safer drivers than men, many car insurance providers offer lower car insurance premiums to females, Sainsbury's Car Insurance explains.
Research by the car insurance provider shows that in January this year, women's car insurance premiums cost an average 12.8 per cent less than those of males.
"Male drivers account for the majority of motoring convictions and young male motorists for example, cause considerably more accidents than similarly aged female drivers," points out Will Blackett, car insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank.
He says all car insurance companies take this into account when calculating car insurance quotes.
"Women motorists need to be aware that these savings can vary dramatically and should seek a range of quotes — not just from their existing insurer or women only policies," Mr Blackett advises.
He says when motorists shop around for car insurance they should not only search for a competitive quote, but also for "excellent" insurance cover.
"Competition in the car insurance industry is intense which means not all policies offer similar levels of cover," Mr Blackett explains.
"It is however possible to find quality cover at a competitive rate."
