Ryanair car insurance middle of the road, says expert

Fri, 23 Jun 2006

Ryanair's new UK car insurance policy is a "middle of the road" option, according to an expert.

The budget airline has followed its competitor easyJet by launching the car insurance policy, but price comparison expert insuresupermarket believes that the product must be competitive to win over UK residents.

Richard Mason, director of the company, commented: "Ryanair may well be trying to rival their airline competitors, easyJet, in this move.

"Looking at the numbers, however, easyMoney wins for the younger driver, being cheaper by £53.46 a year, yet Ryanair charge £104.61 less for the older driver, so it is something of a mixed bag."

Mr Mason also continues that Ryanair's car insurance policies are not highly competitive for younger drivers, but for someone in their 30s the cover is "modestly priced".

He also notes that the company's reputation may lead to higher expectations of value than the car insurance policy achieves.

American Express have also launched a car insurance policy this week, which Mr Mason believes is indicative of a move into the market for larger companies.

The American Express policy is designed to be suitable for all drivers.
