Taking passengers on journeys to work might make the trip safer and save the driver money, according to experts.
Also, car insurance policies are not affected by the passengers making reasonable mileage payments, as long as no profit-making is involved.
Passengers may also enable the driver to be safer, which may prevent a hefty car insurance claim.
Mike Pickard, head of risk &underwriting at Halifax car insurance, said: "More and more people are driving to work every day . causing jams, as well as increasing petrol and parking costs.
"Passengers in the car not only improve your environmental credentials, they can also act as an extra pair of eyes for you, especially in the morning rush hour when traffic is at its heaviest.
"Insurance wise, you can carry passengers in return for a mileage payment as long as there is no element of profit."
Recent evolutions in car insurance policies have seen the UK's first eco-friendly policy introduced by Cooperative Insurance and the inception of several specific policies for hybrid vehicles.
Halifax is the UK's largest mortgage and savings provider and is also one of the UK's biggest providers of credit cards.
