Over one-in-five UK motorists have driven shortly after taking drugs, according to car insurance provider More Than.
The company also reports that four out of ten drug-drivers believe that their judgement on the road is not affected by drugs.
"Alarming ignorance" is partly to blame, according to the insurance company, but also ten per cent of those asked stated that they broke the law because they "think they can get away with it"
Just under a third of respondents said they would be deterred if more checks were carried out by police, while a further 13 per cent if the punishment was more severe.
More Than also warns that road-users who are not under the influence are still at risk of an accident because of the problem, which could possibly result in injury or a hefty claim on a car insurance policy.
Mike Holliday-Williams, director of More Than insurance, said, "Drug driving presents a serious risk not only to those who choose to do it, but also to other motorists on the road.
"We believe that roadside screening should be a practical reality within the next two years and urge the government to introduce the test without delay".
Recently, several groups have called for the introduction of a more thorough system of roadside testing, including the RAC foundation.
