The new range of eco-friendly car insurance policies is a "marketing ploy", according to an expert.
Emma Holyer, a spokesperson for car insurance provider Direct Line, claims that green car insurance policies do not offer a discount, as they were wrongly priced to begin with.
She state that drivers who are concerned with ecological matters are often safe, "responsible" motorists, who rarely use cars for short trips and thus require lower car insurance premiums.
"In our experience, we find that these cars tend to be driven by people in their 30s or 40s who are generally safe drivers, they have some experience, they drive less miles so there is less chance to be involved in an accident," she said.
Ms Holyer adds that car insurance policies should be lower for these drivers "by their very nature".
She continues that drivers should shop around when choosing a car insurance policy in order to get the best value.
Co-operative Insurance recently released figures indicating that 82 per cent of UK residents would prefer to opt for a green car insurance policy.
