Winter warning from car insurance company

Tue, 31 Jan 2006

A leading car insurance company has warned vehicle owners that the cold weather could pose an increased threat of car crime.

Sainsbury's Car Insurance says that thousands of car owners could become the victims of 'frosting' – a crime committed by opportunistic thieves who take their gap when cars are left unattended while the engine is warned up.

Every year, more than 24,000 households fall victim to this offence, the car insurance company found.

Despite the fact that better security systems, locks and immobilisers have complicated thieves' work lately, many of them now strike when motors are left unattended, comments the manager of Sainsbury's Car Insurance, Richard Clark.

He adds that the car insurance company is "concerned" that the extreme cold weather that has been predicted will result in "more people taking the risk" and then falling victim to 'frosting'.

Apart from the threat of crime, cold weather could also make driving conditions more hazardous than usual.

The car insurance company says vehicle owners need to take extra care when driving in poor weather conditions.

It also advises motorists to ensure their cars are fully prepared for the cold weather and that they should make certain that they have adequate car insurance in place.
