Drivers average nine accidents, car insurance company says

Mon, 23 Jan 2006

The average motorist could prepare for being involved in nine car accidents during their lifetime, according to new research by a leading car insurance company.

Churchill Insurance revealed that drivers are involved in one accident every six and a half years.

Annually, 3.9 million car accidents take place in the UK, meaning that 7.4 accidents occur at any given minute, the car insurance company calculated.

Female drivers are more likely than their male counterparts to have an accident, as they average 9.2 car accidents throughout their lifetime, compared to men's 8.2.

However, this does not necessarily mean that women aren't as skilled drivers as men are, as women's life expectancy is 80 years and men's is 75. The frequency of accidents is then more or less the same for both genders, Churchill Insurance says.

"People will be surprised at how frequently they need to make a car insurance claim over their lifetime, which highlights the need for comprehensive insurance," says Darren McCauley, the head of car insurance at Churchill Insurance.

"Car accidents are one of the less enjoyable things about being a driver, but it's inevitable that you will have to make a claim at some point," he adds, saying that even competent drivers are not immune against unfortunate incidents like objects hitting a windscreen.

Almost three-quarters of drivers need to make a car insurance claim for vehicle theft at least once. The car insurance company also found that drivers would need to make insurance claims for windscreen damage at least three times in their lifetime.
