Car insurance provider offers winter warning

Motorists should ensure they are adequately prepared by taking precaution against breakdowns, a car insurance provider has warned.

Tesco Personal Finance says that apart from having adequate car insurance in place, drivers need to make sure they know what to do in case their car breaks down.

Research by the insurance provider found that most people will not stop to offer assistance if they see a motorist whose car has broken down.

"Though it can seem uncaring to carry on driving when you see someone in trouble, it is for the best," says Allan Burns, head of insurance at Tesco Personal Finance.

"Motorists should always call their breakdown service provider rather than trying to flag down other drivers."

The car insurance provider offers tips to drivers to ensure their cars are as reliable as possible, particularly in the winter.

Drivers should check their cars' batteries and tyre thread, says Tesco, explaining that better tread will result in better grip.

Lights should also be clean and in proper working condition, according to the insurance provider.

Tesco Personal Finance says all drivers should ensure they have adequate car insurance, including breakdown cover.

"We would urge all motorists to make ensure their cars are properly prepared for winter journeys and that they have adequate breakdown cover should they need to be rescued," Mr Burns concludes.
