Career could influence car insurance premium

Tue, 14 Feb 2006

Estate agents, community nurses, chefs and doctors are the drivers with the worst accident records, according to research by a car insurance company.

An analysis of car insurance claims received by Churchill Car Insurance revealed that people in these vocations have been involved in the highest number of accidents.

In comparison, farmers represent the occupation responsible for the least number of car insurance claims, according to the insurance company.

Churchill Car Insurance believes this could be because there is lower congestion in rural areas where farmers live and work.

Pastoral regions are also believed to be calmer than stressful office environments where those in other jobs use their cars, the insurance company speculates.

The head of car insurance at Churchill, Darren McCauley, says occupations provide a "useful lifestyle indicator", which is used to calculate car insurance premiums.

He explains: "It helps us to ensure that customers with good claims records do not subsidise those who make frequent claims."

Ambulance drivers and pilots are among the drivers responsible for low numbers of car insurance claims, according to Churchill.
