An expert has warned that additional clauses may be added to many car insurance policies in 2007.
Andy Mills, director of Auto Theft Merchandise, claimed that a new vehicle safety site to be launched by Thatcham indicates that car insurance companies may reduce the level of cover offered in policies.
"Things you don't realise aren't going to be insured, like your stereo," he remarked.
"If you don't take the face off your stereo and carry it around, if it gets nicked it will be your fault."
Additionally, the expert said that many individuals using their vans for commercial purposes find that purchasing insurance for the contents is dearer than that of the vehicle - prompting them to opt for security products rather than a policy.
David Ross, a spokesman for Norwich Union, recently claimed that UK residents in inner-city areas often pay more for their car insurance premiums than their rural counterparts.
Mr Ross said that urban areas prompt a higher risk of accidents, vandalism or theft, leading to car insurance providers offering higher quotes.
