"Careless driving" could lead to many accidents on the roads across the UK , according to research from a car insurance provider.
While not engaging in illegal activities such as drink-driving or talking on a mobile phone , many UK residents are still endangering themselves by other factors, the study by NatWest car insurance indicates.
Other advice such as keeping two chevrons from the car in front, not eating and drinking while behind the wheel and taking regular breaks are often not heeded, the car insurance provider claims.
Furthermore, respondents to the survey also claimed to have made errors such as running out of petrol, turning the wrong way into a slip road and falling asleep in a traffic jam, which may result in a car insurance claim.
Bob Trinder, head of NatWest general insurance marketing, said: "It is clear from this research that for their own safety, drivers need to pay attention to advice and road rules.
"Driving safely is paramount."
Mr Trinder added that many accidents, road rage incidents and subsequent car insurance claims could be avoided by adhering to advice.
The study comes days after NatWest announced that its new car insurance customers will receive a free breakdown cover package.
