Worst areas for car insurance revealed

Drivers in the north-west and London are paying motor insurance rates that are up to 44 per cent higher than in the rest of the UK, reveals new research.

According to Tesco Car Insurance, drivers in the north-west pay an average yearly car insurance premium of £541 and Londoners are shelling out £563. This compares to the national average of just £442.

"Unfortunately for motorists in the north-west and London, high claim rates, car crime and sheer volume of traffic are forcing insurers to push up premiums in these highly urban areas," commented Allan Burns from the car insurance company.

The survey revealed that the cheapest insurance is found in East Anglia where the average insurance premium is £329. Relatively low insurance can also be found in Scotland, Wales and the south-west.

Even if you can't do anything about where you live, Allan Burns still recommends that insurance hunters shop around for the best insurance deal possible.

According to the insurance company's research, shopping around could save drivers in the West Midlands up to £111 against the average insurance premium. Similarly, south-west drivers could make savings of as much as £142 by considering all their options.
