A leading UK insurance company is urging drivers to say sorry after they have been involved in a car accident.
Norwich Union revealed that motorists who are reluctant to say sorry after a road accident were being left out of pocket and is costing policyholders a lot of money each year as a result. Motorists are reluctant to apologise because they believe it will be taken as an admission of guilt.
Dominic Claydon, spokesman for Norwich Union said, "Not saying sorry has two effects: it encourages some people to exaggerate minor damages or injuries, and prevents others from correctly identifying the extent of their injuries. Both have an inflationary effect on the cost of claims that are passed on to motorists as increased premiums and excesses."
The survey found that a third of drivers tend to exaggerate what injuries they have suffered and make other insurance related claims if the other party was to blame.
Claydon added, "People feel they must exaggerate their injuries to ensure they are seen as the aggrieved party or to punish the other driver for what they see as unreasonable behaviour."
