Motorists that leave their cars in the drive or on the street and not in garages could be losing out on almost £100 million in insurance discounts, Saga Motor Insurance found.
The car insurance provider revealed that only 24 per cent of car owners park their vehicles in a garage, even though more than half own garages.
This means that some 22 million cars are left "at the mercy of opportunist thieves, vandals and the British weather", points out Andrew Goodsell, Saga's chief executive.
More than 70 per cent of drivers who have garages but still leave their cars outside said they kept their junk in their garages, leaving no room for their cars.
A further one in five said their cars do not fit into their garages. Saga found that cars are indeed growing larger. The latest Ford Fiesta has grown by over eight centimetres in the last decade.
As two-thirds of garage owners admit they are unable to use their garages because it is full of unused household items, Mr Goodsell recommends their clear out their garages.
"By clearing out their garage to make room for their car they could make a significant saving on their motor insurance," he says.
The car insurance provider's research found that drivers aged 50 and older are more conscious of car security. Of these drivers, 70 per cent who have a garage use it for their car.
