Car insurance provider won't scrap Driving Other Cars cover

Mon, 17 Oct 2005

Those with car insurance at Direct Line will continue to benefit from cover for Driving Other Cars, the car insurance provider has revealed.

This announcement follows after other insurance providers revealed that they will no longer offer this as a standard feature to car insurance policies, as they believe it increases uninsured driving and insurance fraud.

Driving Other Cars cover allows policyholders to use other vehicles and covers another person to drive the insured car in case of an emergency.

"We don't want to leave our customers stuck if they are in an emergency situation and so we will continue to provide our customers with cover," Direct Line spokesperson Emma Holyer confirmed.

She said the car insurance provider is "not prepared to leave its law-abiding customers high and dry just because of a few untrustworthy motorists".

Ms Holyer added that car insurance providers should consider changing specific underwriting rules if they have concerns, rather than removing the insurance cover for all motorists.

Research shows that five per cent of motorists take to the roads without car insurance.

Uninsured drivers are three times more likely to be convicted of careless or negligent driving, and ten times more likely than the average motorist to have been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, the car insurance provider found.
