AA insurance to continue other car insurance cover

Fri, 07 Oct 2005

The country's largest insurance provider has said that it will continue to provide Driving Other Cars (DOC) insurance cover for its customers, despite Norwich Union's decision earlier in the week.

The AA said that whilst other car insurance providers have withdrawn the policy option, which allows individuals to be insured whilst driving someone else's car in an emergency, it said it would be unfair on honest drivers.

It said that there was a link between DOC and uninsured driving and that many insurance providers wished to eliminate the problem by withdrawing the cover. But the AA said many drivers would not know that the cover had been withdrawn and would believe that they would still benefit from it.

The AA said that the insurance industry should educate its customers: "[They] should be made aware that DOC is for emergency purposes and only extends cover to another insured vehicle"

"Removal could be reserved for those who abuse the privilege. Policy documents and supporting information could specify what actually constitutes an emergency."

Norwich Union said to Auto Express yesterday that drivers with fully comprehensive policies to drive uninsured cars are abusing DOC. The insurer said that customers were paying premiums for cheaper cars then driving more expensive ones the rest of the time.

A spokesman said: "This is an important step in reducing uninsured driving, and it's the right thing to do. Anyone who drives in this country should be concerned at how DOC is being abused."
