Road Runners are running up the cost of car insurance for honest policyholders, a car insurance provider says.
Half of motorists are Road Runners – drivers who drive off after damaging an unattended car – according to a study by Cornhill Direct.
One in two drivers had their cars damaged by Road Runners while the vehicle was unattended, the car insurance company found.
Honest car insurance policyholders are having to pay an estimated £30 more every year in order to cover damages and injuries caused by motorists who have no car insurance or couldn't be traced, the car insurance company's Ian Firth says.
"Motorists who cause damage to other vehicles should take responsibility for their actions," he urged.
The survey of 1,300 drivers found that women are more prone to becoming Road Runners – as they are more likely than men to leave the scene of the accident without leaving their details.
In 2003, almost 30,000 drivers faced prosecution for not stopping after being involved in an accident, the car insurance company points out.
