Roadside distractions are drawing drivers' eyes off the road, causing many cars to veer out of lane, new research shows.
Car insurance company Privilege Insurance found that a quarter of UK drivers have caused road chaos by being distracted by billboards, flashing signs and Christmas decorations.
Four in ten drivers admit they could take their eyes off the road for up to five seconds, which equates to 15 car lengths when driving at 30 miles per hour.
Dr Mark Young, transport ergonomics expert at Brunel University, has expressed growing concern about the lack of a coherent strategy for arranging roadside furniture.
"Drivers' visual workload varies through the course of a journey and at crucial times – negotiating a difficult roundabout, for example – there is a small but significant risk of distraction from novel stimuli like advertising," he warns.
In order to keep their focus on the road, Privilege Insurance is offering drivers safety tips. These include listening to mid-paced music to relieve boredom and constantly scanning the road environment for potential dangers.
Motorists are also being urged to ensure they have adequate car insurance in place.
Privilege Insurance offers special car insurance for safe drivers. Motorists who have four years or more of making no insurance claims are guaranteed to receive the lowest car insurance quote when they renew their fully comprehensive car insurance with Privilege.
