With car thieves getting away with a vehicle once every minute in the UK, a car insurance company is warning motorists to protect their property.
Opportunistic thieves are capitalising on British car owners' negligence, says AA Insurance.
In winter, one in five motorists start the car and get back into the house while the vehicle defrosts, presenting ample opportunity for a criminal to take off in their car.
Likewise, one in ten British motorists regularly keep their car keys in their vehicles, with 30 per cent leaving their keys by the front door of their home where potential thieves can easily grab them.
The large number of people offering "an open invitation to thieves" amazes Kevin Sinclair, managing director of AA Insurance.
He warns that many car insurance companies will take "a very dim view" of insurance claims made under circumstances of negligence by insurance policyholders.
"Even the best attitude to car security is worth nothing if the keys are kept somewhere where they can be easily stolen," he says.
