Churchill car insurance has warned the 7.8 million motorists that cross the channel every year to ensure their car insurance policies covers them sufficiently.
The car insurance provider said all car insurers should include third party car insurance cover for travel abroad at no extra cost.
However, it warned, these car insurance policies do not necessarily cover any damage or loss to the car insurance policy holder's own vehicle or possessions.
Unlike some other car insurance providers, Churchill car insurance automatically offers car insurance policy holders up to 90 days' insured driving all around Europe.
Car insurance policy holders get the same comprehensive cover elsewhere in Europe as they would have in the UK at no additional cost.
Churchill's head of car insurance, Darren McCauley warned motorists to check with their car insurance provider what their insurance policy covers before they travel.
"Churchill motorists who become involved in an accident abroad can have the peace of mind knowing that their vehicle will be repatriated to the UK for repair," he said.
"If its more convenient for the customer, they can have their car repaired locally."
Repatriation of cars to the UK costs from £800 from France or Ireland up to £1,200 from Southern Spain or Greece.
Churchill car insurance suggested drivers take necessary precautions before embarking on their holidays, like having their car thoroughly serviced and carrying a spare set of car keys with them.
