Motorists crossing the English Channel should make sure their car insurance policies provide them with adequate cover, Privilege Insurance has warned.
The car insurance provider has warned car owners to make sure all drivers are added to the car insurance policy before embarking on holidays.
Even if friends or family members have car insurance for driving in the UK, they may only be covered under third party car insurance when driving your car. When they are driving your car abroad, they might not be insured at all, Privilege Insurance warned.
Other drivers could be added to the car insurance policy as temporary additional drivers, which would enable them to drive with the same cover as the insured car owner.
Privilege Insurance offers car insurance policyholders the opportunity to add additional drivers to the existing car insurance policy for up to 30 days with a maximum of 90 days a year, which is ideal for those taking longer summer road trips.
Last year, the average amendment that could be made for temporary additional drivers was 12 days.
Privilege Insurance's managing director Ian Parker warned: "In the excitement of planning a holiday it is easy to forget to check your car insurance policy.
"Finding yourself without adequate cover in a foreign country could not only spoil a good holiday it could also prove costly as your insurance claim may not be valid if the driver at the time of an accident is not covered."
