The AA has issued a warning to British drivers that they should ensure their car insurance policies offer them full protection.
AA Insurance estimates that as much as a quarter of a million motorists set off on their summer holidays without realising that their car insurance is not adequate, leaving them open to unexpected expenses.
Kevin Sinclair, the managing director of AA Insurance says that car insurance is often overlooked when people prepare to go on holiday, as things like the packing, ferry or tunnel tickets and other travel essentials take precedence.
He said that that because the third-party part of a car insurance policy automatically includes Europe, the International Insurance Certificate (Green Card) is no longer necessary in EU countries.
"But although you might have comprehensive cover in the UK, you shouldnt assume that the same applies for journeys across the channel," Mr Sinclair warned.
The AA also dished out some advice on packing for a summer holiday: remember to take all your car insurance documents and travel insurance policies with you.
Mr Sinclair said that insurance providers should be able to send you a translation of your insurance certificate, so that language would not be a barrier.
"We also encourage drivers to take out European breakdown cover if the worst comes to the worst, this will at least enable you to continue to enjoy your holiday while your broken-down or accident-damaged car is repaired or repatriated."
