A leading insurance company has urged the car insurance industry to ensure they treat all customers equally, especially in the light of the new Civil Partnerships Act coming into force.
Tesco Car Insurance points out that same-sex couples that enter into civil partnerships need to be given the same car insurance discounts currently being offered to married couples.
Because the majority of insurance companies regard married drivers as a safer risk, they offer them a discount of up to 15 per cent off their car insurance premium.
However, Tesco Car Insurance points out that insurance companies like Esure, Sheila's Wheels and Sainsbury's Car Insurance still do not offer the same car insurance discount to same-sex couples.
"The Civil Partnerships Act redresses an imbalance in equality," says Allan Burns, the head of insurance at Tesco.
"The whole motor insurance industry must make sure it has done the same."
Tesco Car Insurance offers the same discounts to all couples, having been one of the first car insurance companies in 2002 to introduce an equality policy.
It decided that a driver's life stage, and not choice of life partner, is a key indicator when determining the price of car insurance.
Tesco Car Insurance offers comprehensive car insurance cover at "competitive" premiums.
Discount of ten per cent applies when car insurance is bought online.
Optional breakdown assistance and van insurance are available from Tesco Car Insurance.
The insurance company also offers home insurance, car breakdown assistance, pet insurance, life insurance and travel insurance.
