Speeding drivers are endangering the lives of thousands with risky road behaviour.
A third of road deaths is caused by speeding, yet nearly all motorists admit to speeding, Direct Line car insurance found.
The fact that speed kills is no deterrent to the nearly 60 per cent of drivers saying speeding on empty roads is acceptable. A further quarter could be found speeding when weather conditions are good.
The car insurance provider found that only half of UK drivers have a sound knowledge of speed limits, even though almost all of them claimed to know their speed limits.
Emma Holyer of Direct Line car insurance said the lack of knowledge amongst motorists is very surprising.
"Not only is speeding dangerous but as many motorists know to their expense, speed cameras exist across the UK and the points on your licence and fine incurred can be hefty," she warned.
"In todays high powered cars, its easy to lose concentration and go over the limits and it may be that many motorists are speeding without realising it."
In a separate study with road safety charity Brake, the car insurance provider found that 96 per cent of drivers believe it is very dangerous to speed outside a school. Nearly three-quarters said speeding in a 30-zone was dangerous.
"It is in your best interests to keep an eye on your speedometer and keeping speeds down," the car insurance provider urged.
