Car thefts have halved over the last five years according to data from Churchill car insurance.
The UK car insurance provider claims that there were 504,000 car thefts in 2000 compared to just over 250,000 in 2005.
Darren McCauley, head of car insurance at Churchill, said that a large proportion of the reduction can be put down to improvements in technology.
"Security systems in cars have become much more sophisticated in recent years," said Mr McCauley.
"Compulsory fitting of immobilisers in new cars has been a major factor in the reduction of car theft and modern cars are hard to steal unless in possession of the keys."
The data from the insurer showed that older cars were more suseptable to theft with the Vauxhall Belmont Merit 1989, the Vauxhall Nova 1.2 Luxe 1991 and Vauxhall Astra Merit 1994 proving the top targets for thieves.
Meanwhile the most secure cars were named as the Citroen Xsara Picasso SX 16v 2000, the Honda Jazz SE 2002 and the Ford Fiesta Zetec 1999.
Whether the reduction in car theft will lead to cheap car insurance is yet to be seen.
