Questions to ask your insurer

  • Make sure you are clear about comparing "like with like" when asking for quotes, and that the category of policy you are applying for is clearly defined - i.e. fully comprehensive, third party fire & theft, or third party only.

  • In the event of an accident, will you be offered:
    • 24 hour helpline contact number?
    • A courtesy car if yours needs servicing?
    • Assistance in getting home (e.g. taxi or train fares)?
    • Legal support?


  • Who has to make arrangements for repairing your vehicle after an accident?
  • Who will repair my car after an accident?
  • How much excess will I have to pay when I make a claim?
  • How can I pay for my policy? Will I get penalised if I pay by direct debit (some insurers make you pay more this way - effectively adding interest to your premiums). If you are short of funds, and the premium is substantially more for paying by direct debit, we would recommend using your credit card.
